Lithium polymer (Li-Pol) batteries represent the most modern energy source. They excel primarily in their low weight and excellent discharge characteristics. They do not suffer from any memory effect, and another advantage is the very low self-discharge rate of approximately 1% per month, compared to approximately 10–15% for NiCd and NiMH batteries. Due to the completely different type of electrochemical reaction occurring inside the cells, they require completely different handling than standard NiCd or NiMH batteries.

The nominal voltage of a Li-Pol cell is 3.7V (as opposed to 1.2V for NiCd and NiMH batteries). During operation, the cell voltage must under no circumstances exceed 4.2V while charging or drop below 3V. Exceeding these values will most likely result in irreversible damage to the battery. During normal operation, the open-circuit voltage (before you start charging the battery) should not drop below 3.5V. If you detect a lower voltage before charging, you are definitely over-discharging the batteries.

For this reason, you must use a special charger for Li-Pol batteries, as well as a special protection circuit (Alarm Li-Pol), which will alert you to critical battery discharge.

Protect the cells from mechanical damage—such as torn-out electrodes or punctures. This could cause an internal short circuit, leading to an explosion and fire. Do not puncture even “swollen” cells—swelling is a sign of internal damage, and the cell could turn into a flamethrower if punctured. Place the battery on a non-flammable surface while charging, or place it in a Li-Pol Safe Bag. No flammable objects or liquids should be nearby. The manufacturer recommends storing batteries charged to approximately 70% capacity.
